Federal agencies and experts warn that a historic wave of mental-health problems is approaching: depression, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide.

“What’s shocking to me is how little leaders are talking about this. There are no White House briefings about it. There is no plan.”

The suicides of two New York health-care workers highlight the risks, especially to those combating the pandemic. Lorna Breen, a top New York emergency room doctor, had spent weeks contending with coronavirus patients flooding her hospital and sometimes dying before they could be removed from ambulances. She had no history of mental illness, her relatives have said in interviews, but struggled increasingly with the emotional weight of the outbreak before she died. Days later, reports emerged that a Bronx emergency medical technician also killed himself.

Researchers have created models — based on data collected after natural disasters, terrorist attacks and economic downturns — that show a likely increase in suicides, overdose deaths and substance use disorders.

Hell, even I tied one on a few times this summer.  I imagine the nurses must be hitting the bottle after their shift is over.   I don't know how people do it.  Maybe they don't know any way out.  Kant was concerned with this idea of duty.   Does anyone have a duty to keep it together?   Even if one did cultivate this sense of duty and chants positive thinking mantras, that will not alleviate psychological distress or emotional suffering. Everyone is an animal, and all animals have limits to what they can or will endure.

Speaking for myself, while I have always been prone to mood swings, and most days the heavy burden of my own existence weighs me down, lately I have sensed a higher level of anxiety and fear about the future, fear of the unknown, fear of BEING-IN-THE-WORLD.

For me, though, it is not so much the pandemic, but life in general.  This is what makes life so ridiculous, that we can be tired of living and wish it to come to an end so we might rest in peace, but most of us do not take our own lives.  And there are few people who are honest about how they really feel about existence in general.  They think that they can "create their own reality" by thinking certain thoughts.

When I see things as they really are, that I enjoy using mechanical keyboards built in a slave factory somewhere in the Far East, I can't help but feel complicit.  I would not want to work in a factory assembling your keyboards or computers or smart-phones.

So many conflicting emotions.  If I am not willing to work in such a factory, I have to prepare myself to live in a world where no one wants to work in such a factory.

Tensions are rising in Europe as COVID rules tighten

Tensions are running high across parts of Europe with fresh COVID lockdowns and vaccine mandates being bitterly resisted on the streets. Two protestors remain in hospital in the Netherlands after police opened fire during riots.
