That is correct. Human beings make for good "energy slaves," but they must be fed, sheltered and kept docile. That requires a lot of energy. Then we discovered fossil fuels and found that it needs little energy input to extract a gainful output. So we still enslave each other, but do less of the work: you can't just let people be free and not on schedule. Every animal must be domesticated on this planet.

Is it impossible to sustain 8 billion and growing humans without fossil fuels for agriculture? Likely so.

A delicate game, but we will exploit any and every "energy slave" out there until this planet is rendered inhabitable for much of life at present. Biological life hastens the entropic properties of the cosmos.
