Whenever I am lost in my thoughts, and stumble upon the above question I seem to answer myself in the following way.
"Because it's not who you are underneath, but what you do that defines you."

Does "what you do" only have significance when associated with employment?
When HP Lovecraft was jobless all those years, his writing was his work, right?
