For eight bottles of shampoo a woman can go to jail.

A woman was accused of trying to steal 8 bottles of shampoo from a minimarket in 2017 and judge Leticia Paredes upheld the case orally and publicly. The prosecutor who investigates the event is Patricio Gaona, who has been accused of sexual harassment.

The young woman now has alternative measures and the trial that was planned today was suspended "for the purpose of minimizing the inconvenience for the accused", so that she does not have to travel twice from Ciudad del Este to Asunción, since she must also report for her signature in court between 1 and 5 of each month, according to Dr. Victorina Ortiz, head of the Court of Judgment.

The accused female would have tried to steal items that cost less than 150,000 guaraníes,(USD 25) but the prosecution ensures that the damages amount to 480,000. (USD 70) If the woman's guilt is proven, she is exposed to up to 5 years in prison or a fine.

For Senor Raul:

Why need we weep over parts of our life? the whole of it calls for tears: new miseries assail us before we have freed ourselves from the old ones. You, therefore, who allow them to trouble you to an unreasonable extent ought especially to restrain yourselves, and to muster all the powers of the human breast to combat your fears and your pains. Moreover, what forgetfulness of your own position and that of mankind is this? You were born a mortal, and you have given birth to mortals: yourself a weak and fragile body, liable to all diseases, can you have hoped to produce anything strong and lasting from such unstable materials? Your son has died: in other words he has reached that goal towards which those whom you regard as more fortunate than your offspring are still hastening. this is the point towards which move at different rates all the crowds which are squabbling in the law courts, sitting in the theaters, praying in the temples. Those whom you love and those whom you despise will both be made equal in the same ashes.
-Seneca

Holden,

Once again thank you for sharing this quote. Powerful words uttered by the Roman in his time.

We, humans, are just living graves on this Earth. Some say life is a forest. A very ugly forest. The majority hugs the trees or hugs their chains, i.e. work, marriage, career, status, etc., even if the trees are twisted. And the trees will fall one day. The dark woodcutter will come.

Indeed, as Seneca says, we will be all made equal in the same ashes. All this journey ending in ashes. What a macabre joke!
To know and realize this madness complicates existence in this world. This knowledge is not prescribed for patients who want life free from problematic issues.

I found this quote by Nicolas de Chamfort who wrote: “Living is a disease from the pains of which sleep eases us every sixteen hours; sleep is but a palliative, death alone is the cure.”

Stay safe.
