Dysphoria = Verstimmung
« on: August 11, 2018, 11:17:26 am »
I am looking for words which I can incorporate into my vocabulary which might help me better describe my day-to-day state of mind, rather than getting stuck in the rut of describing myself as "not right in the head."

The fact is that I am just abnormally honest about what it feels like [for me] to be alive, and I have suspected for a long time now that the difference between myself and those who appear "normal" is not the psychiatric-medical [i.e., mythological]] "chemical imbalance."   No, the difference is that I go out of my way to face how it really feels to exist, whereas I suspect the majority of people are in the habit of projecting "how they wish others to perceive how it feels for them to exist."

Maybe the reason so few would wish to engage in a conversation with me is because they may sense this, that I do not believe the facades, the farce.

I have no patience conversing with "couples."   It requires too much restraint, too much polite dishonesty.

Dysphoria is a profound state of unease or dissatisfaction. In a psychiatric context, dysphoria may accompany depression, anxiety, or agitation.  It does not have to have anything whatsoever to do with "gender identity."

See Scientific Articles at Library Genesis: Dysphoria in Mania and in Depression

From the abstract of the second article from European Psychiatry:  Phenomenology of Dysphoria:

Dysphoria is a very vague and unspecific term in psychopathology. Neither in classical authors, such as Kraepelin or Wernicke, nor in modern handbooks or manuals, is it possible to find any precise definition of this symptom or state. In German texts sometimes appears as synonym of '”Verstimmung”, which simply means 'alteration of the mood”.

All I seem to be able to download is the abstract.   :-\

From the other article, Depression, mania, and feeling bad: the role of dysphoria in mixed states:

Dysphoria can refer to many ways of feeling bad.  ‘Dysphoric mania’ has been used to describe the entire range of mixed states, or a specific mixed state with prominent irritability, inner tension, and paranoia. Based on the latter, Dayer et al. define dysphoria operationally as a combination of inner tension, hostility, aggression and/or paranoia that is distinct from classic syndromal depression or mania.

The role of dysphoria in Dayer’s formulation of mixed states is a departure from older models.   Kraepelin considered mixed states as a more severe form of manic depressive illness and implied that the painful hyperarousal of mixed states was integral to their increased severity.

I am almost hesitant to follow the trail I happened by on these Interwebs since the source is from what might be classified as "an enemy camp" hostile to the themes held dear by at least one of our main contributors.

So, up front I will state that the following came from an avowed atheistic feminist, Kelly Brogan, MD in Spirituality and Mental Illness.

Quote from: Kelly Brogan
The American Way

Sure, I know some people who feel and live this way too. But my country doesn’t know me and it certainly doesn’t know spirituality. And my country is commandeering the consciousness of traditional people throughout the world.

Predicated on the belief that technology and science are the objective bottom line of truth, American religions adhere to this split between the material and the spiritual, allowing the material (aka the body and the planet) to be controlled by the dominant corporate forces without consideration.

She seems to put a great deal of faith in the "spirituality" of the people in Holden's neck of the woods.  She would not be the first.  My "spiritual great, great grandfather," Arthur Schopenhauer, also paid evident homage to the traditions of our Holden's ancestors.

Please forgive any naivety or romanticism (an outsider's view).  Holden has let us in on the dirty little secrets plaguing Industrialized India, not in the least being the great disparity between the "untouchables" and pariahs versus the obedient gort careerists.

What interests me in this piece is the concept of bio-imperialism.

Quote from: Kelly borgan
Bio-imperialism

And so it’s no wonder that as American fear-based consciousness permeates the globe, so does its mental illness constructs – so that it provides both the sickness and the “treatment.” Headlines are claiming that mental illness in India is on the rise, and awareness generating campaigns to medicate Indians are underway.

Is this a new form of imperialism? Bio-imperialism?

It would make sense that as we enter this darkest hour of the old story, the forces of disconnection would be working to desecrate this most sacred land and its people.

Perhaps that’s why we have polio campaigns in India – an oral polio vaccine deemed too dangerous for the first world – which in 2011 alone was responsible for a documented 47,500 cases of vaccine-induced paralysis. And we have 30,000 Indian girls experimented on with the HPV vaccine thanks to the philanthropic efforts of the Gates Foundation. And then, of course, there’s Monsanto’s efforts to commandeer the agriculture of the nation resulting in the suicide of literally hundreds of thousands of Indian farmers who suffered the choke-hold illegalities of Bt cotton. In India, you cannot patent life. Monsanto doesn’t care.

But Monsanto, Gates, and Pharma are just the ugly heads of a monster we have all co-created. They are the ever growing house whose fireplaces we agreed to tend so that we could have our wish granted.

As I watched the siblings  – who don’t have a sink in their bathroom – on their smart phones gifted by adoring Westerners, I felt the pang of what will be syphoned off from their traditional consciousness and sucked into the vortex of a digital existence.

Perhaps what I am sensing is present in India – this deep fabric of spirituality – is actually in its death throes and I am romanticizing a tragedy. I don’t know. But what I do know is that our struggles as Westerners, particularly those struggling with poverty, are made all the more poignant because we are struggling without this fabric – flesh robots on a dead rock in the middle of nowhere. And everything hurts so much more because of it.

This was a stressful interview for Oprah. he's talking about the gate keepers to a gate keeper.

Oprah knows damn well what he’s talking about. She’s steady trying to steer the interview and make him admit to being crazy. Kudos to Dave for keeping it so cool.

Thanks Ibra.  I had not looked at the comments, but I was uncomfortable with Ophra's body language.  She seemed to be clearly pushing for some kind of "confession of mental collapse" ...  ::)

It's in her eyes as well.  I figure it is easier just to take it as a given that the gorts will embrace psychiatric labels to explain away (discredit) someone as a cultural entity.   Isn't each of us such an entity?  Who's narrative is one ultimately forced to accept as the true nature of our reality?

The Corporate Psychiatric Apparatus, which is all wired into the Legal "Justice" System and hospitals, might be used by sociopathic gorts to get into someone's pockets and into one's mind.   It is a machine made of meat, and once one is in its belly, one is at the mercy of each "representative"/associate/employee of that apparatus.   It is fascistic in that the entire apparatus grants great authority to each "unit of humanity" on the front lines.

From nurses to soldiers, from domineering citizen/neighbor to manipulative family members, we are each at the mercy of "the civilizing process."  Suddenly, as a human organism, one is confronted by professional employees following procedures and protocols, trained to be detached, trained to handle "unstable phenomena" on this Island of Dr Moreau.  I commend Dave Chappelle for the way he handled himself.  There may be an art to defending the inner sanctum of the mind from society.

When it comes to being human or human being, it seems unethical for the individual to be bullied by the mob, herd, nation; and yet dictators would beg to differ.

There is no doubt a kind of bullying that is exerted by social engineers and propaganda networks.  There is a nightmarish web of cities.   To be paranoid is simply to be awake to the dangerous and hostile quality of the world we have been thrown into.

What is the function of a mental-disorder/chemical-imbalance diagnosis?   His business associates wished to discredit him, or put him in a compromising position, as he says.  This is a creepy world, to say the least.

I accept psychiatric labels, but I have no faith whatsoever in the treatments or cures.  In fact, I am not even interested in having my so-called "insanity" fixed.   This is a highly ethical problem that individual human beings are at the mercy of an unthinking, unfeeling medical/police apparatus which, in failing to be able to "reach" the "being" in the creature, must lock up the animal body for observation in controlled or even in chaotic environs.

It is as though there are those who imagine we must be overwhelmed with despair.  They do not want us to find our strength within ourselves.

Oprah is low key scary right here. Leading, suggesting, interrupting. She's got the crazy eye too in a few parts. She sold out then bought in.

Super creepy.  The way she is holding his hand just screams hostility.  Absolutely nothing seemed caring about her posture.

The way she said "was there a tipping point for you" with dagger eyes and gritted teeth that demon scary

Quote from: The Light
She's really trying to bully him, manipulate him and that. I can actually feel it. She tried so hard to cut him, to make it seem like he was crazy, undermine his story and make sure he doesn't expose things but rather make him agree with her....

Smart people sound like crazy people to dumb people. Don't ever forget that.

So interesting how she is trying to make him admit to being crazy, baiting him over and over. Knowing what we know now. You deserve RESPECT Chapelle!!!!

The advantage of being a pessimist is that, without hope, there can be no true despair.

“Why is it that despite the obvious ethical violations psychiatry commits, nurses remain silent?  What are the institutional conditions under which this silence comes to be?”

from Psychiatry Disrupted, article by Phil Hickey

“The recognition of forced and non-consensual psychiatric interventions as torture represents in itself a step towards reparation of the harm done by these acts of violence.”

“Equating emotional pain to mental illness functions to suppress other possibilities, other meanings, and other stories for naming and responding to such pain.”

“As institutional psychiatry grows in power, more and more people are coming into contact with the psychiatric system and are being labeled and subjected to different types of psychiatric intervention.”

On August 15, 2014, McGill-Queens University Press published Psychiatry Disrupted: Theorizing Resistance and Crafting the (R)evolution.  The work is a collection of papers by various authors, edited by Bonnie Burstow, Brenda A. LeFrançois, and Shaindl Diamond

From PSYCHIATRY DISTRUPTED (Impassioned Praxis: An Introduction to Theorizing Resistance to Psychiatry, by Bonnie Burstow and Brenda LeFrançois):

Psychiatry is not about benevolence, care, or help. While psychiatric apologists such as Edward Shorter (1997) have long positioned psychiatry as the liberators of the mad, in actuality psychiatry imprisons and oppresses people labeled “mad” in astronomical numbers.

At no time in earlier eras was the number caught within the auspices of the mad professions anywhere near the number today. While psychiatry supporters make reference to the terror of Bedlam [1] – currently still in operation, and the hospital in medieval and Renaissance England synonymous with “booby hatch” and memorialized in Shakespeare’s plays (see for example, poor Tom in King Lear) – the reality is that at any given time during this period only twenty or thirty people were actually held there; and as Porter (2002) makes clear, most people thought of as mad were allowed to rove the countryside without incarceration and without drugs. Such people were certainly often ill-treated – we are in no way depicting these earlier times as good – but without the relentless infringement that characterizes psychiatric practice today.
____________________________________________________________

[1]: Bedlam is the colloquial term for the Bethlem Royal Hospital which was the first hospital for the “insane” in Europe located in London, England.  Historical accounts of Bedlam consist of descriptions of moaning, frenzied, and chained inmates, living in degrading circumstances and filthy
conditions, with an inadequate water supply, a frequently backed-up sewage system, and where malnourishment, starvation, and other abuses were the norm. The term “bedlam” has since become synonymous with “chaos,” “confusion,” “uproar,” “irrationality,” and even “madness” itself. Still in
existence today, albeit in a different location from the original building and in what is characterized as more humane conditions, Bedlam has been operating as a psychiatric hospital for over 600 years.
