A Question for Herr Hauser and Senor Raul
« on: April 05, 2020, 01:58:46 am »
Herr Hauser and Senor Raul,

I have a question for you.Asking for a friend  :-\

Hopefully you would be kind enough to respond. If your parents had threatened you that either you get married or else they will never speak to you again and disown and disinhert you and adopt someone else in your place as their legal heir and never ever help you again in any way at all ,or ever see you again, then what would you have done?

What do you think Schopenhauer would have done?(Mind you,in this scenario he loses all his inheritance if he refuses to marry ). Essentially, what I am trying to ask is that do you think Schopenhauer was strong enough to withstand this economic blow and work to earn his daily bread and live all alone in the world? Are you?No help from parents or any of the other relatives. You are completely on your own , financially, socially, emotionally.
Schopenhauer does not get so much as a penny,if he says no to marriage. You get zero support from your parents and relatives.

Could you be the much-awaited Ubermensch  :-\

Thanks.

Holden,

Your question is very important and also very difficult. My circumnstances were very different. What would have I done if my parents threatened me to get married or else they would have never spoken to me again?

My father worked almost all his life and my mother worked until she got pregnant. All the money my father got was because he knew how to save what he earned. Things were different then. But we were never rich. I I don´t know what I would have done. Above all I have no genius, no nothing.

From the little I read about Schopenhauer is that he was a genius and he knew that. He knew he was right. Things would have been different. He would have had to earn his daily bread or commit suicide. Either way the thinking minority would have never read his master works. The world would have never known and read the man from Danzig. I am sure many geniuses were lost this way.

Stay safe.

Holden & Raul,
How are you two holding up? Quarantine is quite ok for "introverts" such as us. What I am curious about is food & other supplies- have either of you experienced shortages in basic necessities?

I have stocked up on rice, beans and frozen vegetables. I have major concerns about the stability of global supply chains.

Take care.

Silenus,

Thank you for your words. I hope you are taking care over there. You have done well in stocking up on rice, beans and frozen vegetables. I also hope you are able to have access to medical services.

We are in Holy Week and most activities in the past decreased because most went to the countryside but today things are different. I buy basic things really. Here most of the basic products come from Argentina and Brazil because the national production does not supply much. There is no food sovereignty in this country. The municipality market is working without health measures. The curfew will probably continue until May. But the economy will suffer and those in power will take advantage of this situation.

Due to this confinement most business activities stopped and although there is a government support it is not enough because many here survive on a daily basis. Besides those in power don´t really care much about the population. The health authorities reacted very late to this huge crisis.

The health authorities are threatening people with the message: Your life or the oven. That is to say, there is a huge oven used by the SENAD, (Secretaría Nacional Antidrogas) similar to the DEA in the U.S. This device used to burn confiscated drugs will be used for cremation.

What else can I say? This could be one of my last messages in this board. The capital has the majority of the infected so I will not avoid the bug.

Take care.

Do I think Arthur Schopenhauer was strong enough to withstand this economic blow and work to earn his daily bread and live all alone in the world?

Schopenhauer would have "worked" for his gruel, and I suspect he would have been something of a scrapper before someone in the mob buried him in a ditch after a dispute.

Schopenhauer does not get so much as a penny,if he says no to marriage. You get zero support from your parents and relatives.

There are countless men in such a situation but have no hope of being in a position to refuse "marriage" as there is no woman foolish enough to attach herself to him.  Schopenhauer was in a unique position, and he seized it.  His parents groomed him for international commerce, hence the languages and the education in England for a spell, where he learned to hate, yes hate, what we would call the State Church of England.

I wish to harness a lifetime of "rejection" and humiliating coming to terms with romantic delusion in order to nurture a dark and morbid cynicism that not even the threat of death or torture could rob from me.  It is time for us to allow our most demented senses of humor take the reigns of the Control Panel in Our Central Nervous Systems.

I am thinking along the lines of, how to greet the Grim Reaper with only 2 days notice?

or something more "Eastern," such as "What would you DO during the last five minutes of your life?"

What was the shape of your face before you were born?

I have a question.  What is the Will to Know?  Suppose my thirst for knowledge is what motivates the organism-as-a-whole to secure sustenance, and all the illusions about "humanity" as a more noble kind of Creature are necessary in order for us to endure the true nature of our interconnected reality: WORMs-DEPENDENT-UPON-GLOBAL-ECONOMY.

We may have to forgive ourselves for having been worms, yet conditioned to believe we were gods.  Such worms would benefit from a strong dose of self-deprecating humor.

My head might choose marriage for inheritance, but I am a difficult creature for even myself to get along with consistently, so, before too long, the marriage would prove to be a disaster.   I have come to terms with the horror I would feel upon intentionally imposing life on another generation simply in hopes of teaching someone Algebras and Codes.

On the other hand, I sympathize with those of aristocratic upbringing, of an eccentric bent, who might refuse the traditional path of marriage in order to embrace a more noble path, such as obscure education or devotion to some radical religious cult.

What would a wealthy Pythagoras do?  Would he erect a formal school, or would his "cult" be quite small?  I suspect that we will have to be our own Pythagorases.  We have to be Schopenhauers-minus-the-financial-security.

It is not hard to imagine.  After all, most of the individuals-in-the-flesh who Schopenhauer admired in his written work seemed to have walked a path that did not lead to material wealth, but, rather, might be more accessible to one with more time to reflect, one who is ostracized by the dissimilarity of tastes and preferences.

On second thought, maybe Arthur Schopenhauer was simply not suited for marriage.  I suppose had his parents insisted he marry, he might have succumbed.  He was rather practical.

Maybe some of us are just too quarrelsome, sensitive, or otherwise peculiarly wired to be forced into traditional, purely biological or socially-defined roles.  No one really knows the nature of reality.  If one is steadfast against matrimony in order to spare oneself the thorny emotional entanglements, then this would be betrayed in one's mannerisms.  In other words, there would be no "getting along," there would be discord.   Or, perhaps, some kind of partnership develops.  It appears you are speaking of business-oriented marriages between parents, as opposed to actual chemically-inspired pair-bondings, which would be the more difficult to resist.

I am "too deep" for marriage or anything like military service.  My intellectual honesty puts me in danger, for I wish to speak as a unique and autonomous entity, not simply be instructed, trained, directed, ordered about ...

I'm not fucking around.  I tried the "playing house" cohabitation with concubine, two canines, and a kitten, and I witnessed that House of Cards tumble down along with my own sanity --- but in the midst of it, there was an intellectual rebirth.  Another part of me was continuing to pursue education in Mathematics and Computer Programming.  The monk in me is fond, not only of mind-altering substances (connecting me to the spirit that moves in all things), but also of life-long learning.

Programming enhanced my interest in mathematics, and visa versa.

A monkish-type man does not attract the ladies since he does not sell his leisure for money, nor does he believe in "financial security" nor in the "security of matrimony" nor in the future of the species or any other organic life, for that matter.

My outlook may be rather grim, but it is not foreign to individual members of our species to have come to similar conclusions.

If an individual man or woman, for that matter, found fulfillment and stimulation within their own Inner Life, and they gracefully dodged the trappings of traditional lifestyles, then they will not only reap the rewards of solitary existence (less bickering over petty and meaningless BS), but would also be free to explore darker aspects of true boredom, without shame, without fear of being judged.

One shows defiance in refusing the social trappings which turn one's life into a lie.

Dangerous are those who do not wish to read their scripts, those who do not know their place, and do not know who they are supposed to be.

Hello Mr.Silenus,
I am alright.I am still on TB meds so Corona did not come as a complete surprise to me.
It's always mourning in my mind, to borrow a line from Sweeney Todd.I am studying maths and philosophy, thanks to Herr Hauser.

I hope you are safe and wish you wrote more often here.I am reading Cioran's biography.

Many more people die due to TB every year over here but it's Corona which is all the rage at the moment.

I keep my head down, mind my own business.Time is taking its course,as Cioran would say.
This is a very populus and a very poor nation.Bad things are in the offing.

I get strange dreams every single night without exception.
I am about to go to bed and I am sure a nightmare awaits me.

You know Schopenhauer wrote on eternal recurrence much before Nietzsche. The man who WANTS LIFE shall have it eternally.I just yearn for the void.

Take care.

Schopenhauer might try to make it work, but his temperament would have doomed him to heavy brooding spells, unless the woman had a great sense of humor.  More likely, he would have suffered the fate of a man hated by his wife and mocked by the town.  He might have been accidentally murdered by ruffians while they mocked him in the rain, then left him in a ditch after beating him to a pulp.

Without the frugal lifestyle to stretch that odd inheritance, I suspect poor Arthur would have been crucified by the mob.

You suspect right,Herr Hauser. In the other thread I left the link for a movie based on a book by Hardy who was greatly inspired by Schopenhauer.

In the book ,Jude is a working man and he wants to be a scholar. He studies on his own.In the end,he dies alone, while his wife leaves to attend a party ,though she knows full well that he is dead.Jude the Obscure.
