Exploring Psychiatric Disorder Definitions
« on: July 01, 2020, 11:41:47 pm »
DISCLAIMER:   Conditions explored do not reflect any official diagnosis on yours truly.  The official tag I've been labelled with is Bipolar Disorder with Rapid Cycling.

Now, the following are just "exploratory" and are not intended to describe my own behaviors and thoughts, although, there will most certainly be some definitions which do, indeed, align with some of my quirks and strengths.

Schizoid personality disorder:

(/ˈskɪtsɔɪd, ˈskɪdzɔɪd/, often abbreviated as SPD or SzPD) is a personality disorder characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships, a tendency toward a solitary or sheltered lifestyle, secretiveness, emotional coldness, detachment and apathy. Affected individuals may be unable to form intimate attachments to others and simultaneously possess a rich and elaborate but exclusively internal fantasy world.  Other associated features include stilted speech, a lack of deriving enjoyment from most activities, feeling as though one is an "observer" rather than a participant in life, an inability to tolerate emotional expectations of others, apparent indifference when praised or criticized, a degree of asexuality and idiosyncratic moral or political beliefs. Symptoms typically start in late childhood or adolescence.

stilted speech:

In psychiatry, stilted speech or pedantic speech is communication characterized by situationally-inappropriate formality. This formality can be expressed both through abnormal prosody as well as speech content that is "inappropriately pompous, legalistic, philosophical, or quaint". Often, such speech can act as evidence for autism spectrum disorder or a thought disorder, a common symptom in schizophrenia or schizotypal personality disorder.

To diagnose stilted speech, researchers have previously looked for the following characteristics:

1. speech conveying more information than necessary
2.  vocabulary and grammar expected from formal writing rather than conversational speech
3. unneeded repetition or corrections

While literal and long-winded word content is often the most identifiable feature of stilted speech, such speech often displays irregular prosody, especially in resonance. Often, the loudness, pitch, rate, and nasality of pedantic speech vary from normal speech, resulting in the perception of pedantic or stilted speaking. For example, overly loud or high-pitched speech can come across to listeners as overly forceful while slow or nasal speech creates an impression of condescension.

I'm glad to see you exploring the schizoid personality. I have decided to "self-diagnose" myself as having one; as you may know I am totally averse to getting an "official" diagnosis. As I am sure you also know, misdiagnosis, mischaracterization are common, everything is a spectrum, etc. etc.

The moderators on the Schizoid reddit page have compiled an excellent "wiki."

I do not mean offense to you, but in the importance of self-learning:

- Having a cold or emotionally needy mother
- Distrust of society/tribalism/groups
- Anhedonia

Ring any bells? :)

There are many advantages to this type of personality, in my opinion. I hope you find the encouragement to read more about this. Of course, antipsych extraordinaire R.D. Laing wrote The Divided Self, which mainly concerns the schizoid.

These definitions attempt to capture something, but we all know that words are not the phenomena they decribe/represent.     Didn't Nietzsche credit Dostoevsky as being the original psychologist?  The following, from the definition of stilted speech, could have been taken directly out of Underground Man, in the scene where the antihero is with a woman.  She accused him of talking like a book, and that such talk gets a man kicked out of bed.

Absolutely. I see schizoid traits in the underground man, Kafka, Beckett, Camus' Mersault (lack of affect, indifference to social bonds).

Hermann Hesse the Borderline Steppenwolf

Quote from: Kevin
Steppenwolf is a fictional study of Borderline Personality Disorder. ‘Harry finds in himself a “human being,” that is to say a world of thoughts and feelings of culture and tamed or sublimated nature, and beside this he finds within himself also a “wolf” that is to say a dark world of instinct of savagery and cruelty’.

Trapped between wolfish despair and human hope, ‘the Steppenwolf lived a suicidal existence,’ fraught with emotional and behavioural instability, he longs for death which does not come, and goes from one crisis to the next.
